Having a pet is a wonderful experience—but along with the fun of it comes the responsibility of ensuring his well-being the best way you know how. OK, obviously your dog is in pain—do you know why? It is important to know the source of his discomfort so you can isolate the problem and deal with it effectively. After all, you cannot give a strong dog pain medicine if the puppy’s problem is the fleas that are nipping at him constantly. If you think that your dog is experiencing a more serious illness, go to the vet and have him examined immediately.

If the discomfort is not serious in nature, there are many natural and effective ways to deal with it. For instance, did you know that Ginger or Peppermint extract can help alleviate nausea brought about by car sickness? You can also lower his stress levels significantly by rubbing some drops of lavender, chamomile or valerian extract on his fur and beddings.

If flea bites or itchy “hot spots” are bothering your canine, apply a mixture of water and tea tree oil on the infected area. Eucalyptus rubbed all over his fur will repel these pesky ticks and leave your dog smelling fresh the whole day as well. As much as you are able, do not use harsh chemicals to treat flea problems—use natural and herbal-based solutions for bathing purposes.

You can also massage them or brush their coat to help ease the tension that also causes them to feel pain. When you do, you will get the chance to inspect them for lesions and cuts that need to be treated so it doesn’t get infected. Rub Aloe Vera on these wounds and if they are not healing after two weeks, have them checked by the veterinarian.

Never give human medication as dog pain medicine. Most over the counter prescription drugs have chemicals that are very bad for the dog. Not only that, it can further aggravate their health condition without you even knowing it. For example, Aspirin can cause ulcers and thins out the blood; this will be dangerous to give animals that have undergone surgery and are in recuperation.

If your pet’s discomfort cannot be relieved by simple herbal solutions, ask the vet to prescribe a safe dosage of a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug for the pain. These are generally safe although there are some reported cases where some dogs experienced harmful side effects. It is highly recommended that medications or drugs should only be administered within a certain period of time.
